How long does it take to sell a podcast?

You’ve made the decision - it’s time to sell your podcast.

This is an exciting but bittersweet moment that you’ve worked hard to achieve, but the work isn’t done. Instead, it might be several months before the deal is closed.

It’s important to remember that financial transactions take time, and selling a podcast is no different. It can take several months to find the right buyer for you. To learn more about evaluating potential buyers, check out our earlier blog post, “Evaluating Potential Buyers.”

Typically, closing periods are 30-60 days, but that depends on how quickly you and the buyer agree to terms.

So, what does the timeline look like?

Step One

Once you decide to sell your podcast, you must find the right buyer. Buyers may want hosts to stay on in a limited capacity or not at all, so be sure you talk to your buyers about their plans for your podcast.

Once you find the right buyer and are both on the same page, you can move on to step two.

Step Two

Next, you and the buyer need to agree on the podcast's purchase price and transfer period. If you need help determining the selling price of your podcast, check out our earlier blog post, “Determine the Value of Your Podcast.”

Additionally, if you’ve decided to stay on board as a consultant or host, how long will you stay? And more importantly, how much will you be compensated?

Step Three

Once the big ideas are sorted out, it’s time to agree on the actual contracts.

This is a good time to discuss ongoing brand partnerships you may have. Typically, the seller keeps any payments that have been made before the transaction's close, but future ads and revenue usually go to the buyer as they’re the new show owner.

Step Four

Finally, it’s time to sell. Once contracts are signed, it’s time to put the show in Escrow and close.

While selling your podcast is a moment filled with both excitement and nostalgia, it’s crucial to approach the process with patience and diligence. Remember, finding the right buyer takes time, and negotiating terms can be a meticulous process. From evaluating potential buyers to finalizing contracts and transitioning ownership, each step requires careful consideration and communication.
